[FASTCGI] FCGX_PutChar() Error code = 156 (0x9C)

I am able to read ascci values for characters in the input stream ok.

When I echo them to the output stream with FCGX_PutChar() I get the error code
156 (0x9C)

What does this code mean?
Is there a list of all the error codes available?

The text that is returned is a series of ? in place of the characters.

If I use FCGX_PutStr() all is good.

What am I missing here?
