Sounds like you're running a real old version of BSDI.  The currently
shipping version is 2.1 with:

	wobble $ gcc -v
	gcc version 2.7.2
	wobble $ cc -v
	gcc version 1.42

Just for fun I did a bit of digging and it looks like we started
shipping 1.42 as cc in the 1.1 release in Febuary of 1994 (we also
shipped 2.5.8 with 1.1).
